Sonora’s First Freshening in 5 weeks

Sonora’s First Freshening in 5 weeks

Mesqutite Valley FK Sonoran Sun is due to freshen on March 17, 2023 and will be nearly 2 years old. This will be her first freshening and she will also be DesertNanny TC French Kiss‘ first daughter to freshen. I’m especially excited to see what she blossoms into because her dam is Mesquite Valley S Sundae which made the Elite List as a first freshener. Sonora’s sire’s dam, was a Grand Champion in the show ring and was also quite a good performer in the milk pail. I’m expecting/hoping that she will perform as well (or better) as her dam in the milk pail with a better udder. Her rear arch has given me great hopes for what is to come.

Sonora was paired with Redstone Fastbreak Sundevil. Sundevil comes from very strong and productive dairy lines where the dams are producing over 1100+ pounds of milk in a 305 day lactation. Redstone lines often milk for 2 years from one kidding so persistence of lactation I expect will be stellar in these kids especially since Sonora’s dam, Sundae, was also in lactation for a year and half as a first freshener. If you’re looking for heavy and consistent milking lines with Elite genetics on both sides, here you go. We anticipate retaining one doeling from this breeding. If you are interested in being placed on the waiting list for a kid, please contact us.

Sundae’s First Lactation Achievements

Sundae’s First Lactation Achievements

Sundae was just under 14 months at her first freshening. I don’t normally breed that young but Sundae was a well-developed junior when we decided to breed her. She freshened on Apri1 1, 2021. Sundae was dried off on August 20, 2022.  Now that she is dry and all of her tests are recorded with CDCB, here are her stats:

  • Total days in milk as a first freshener: 506
  • Total milk in her 506 day lactation: 1198 lbs.
  • Total fat: 6.43% / Total Protein: 4.84%
  • Her 305 day numbers are: 810 lbs milk / 49 lbs fat/ 38 lbs protein
  • Earned her Elite status at 95th percentile of breed in 2021 but fell off the list when we moved her to once p/day milking. She will be freshening in Spring of 2024 and we hope to put her back on the list but permanently this time.
  • Earned her Advanced Registry Star through American Dairy Goat Association (ADGA)
  • Earned her Bronze JuJu Award through American Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Association (ANDDA)
  • She closes her first lactation at a +57 PTA (predicted transmitting ability)

Needless to say we’re over-the-moon excited about this sweet little doe. We are also very anxious to she how she performs as a 2nd freshener. We plan on breeding her again in fall 2022 to our newest buck, Redstone Fastbreak Sundevil. If interested in kids from this pairing, please contact us to be placed on the waiting list.

We are very excited to announce our newest genetics to the herd which comes from Redstone Dairy Goats. I have been watching the Redstone herd for a few years and I just love the well-documented dairiness and body type of Alexis’ animals. Timing and luck were really smiling down on us when we decided it was time to add a new super star buck to the herd. Sundevil, comes to us with some mighty genetics that I’d love to share.

His Dam, Redstone Joyride Aurora, comes from a line breeding on Redstone Dark Star 4*M Elite Doe. Breeder’s notes on this little first freshener is that she’s beautifully uddered and productive and her favorite doe of the season. Redstone SF Dark Star, Aurora’s dam, was a beautiful deep bodied doe that had a strong persistent lactation which earned her Elite status. She has also appraised well over several years with each year better than her last. A line that clearly milks well and holds up over time.

His Sire, Hanson’s Hideaway Fast Break,  comes from a very strong Elite doe, Gladdie Acres CC Reeses 3*M. What is so impressive about Reeses is over her first three lactations she has averaged 1250 pounds of milk and her second freshening was a 291 day lactation at an impressive 1450 pounds of milk. In 2021 she achieved #3 in butterfat production of the breed nationally. She too is appraising well over several years and her Grand Champion show credentials just back that up.
